Success Martial Arts Karate Dragons
Our goal at SMA is to equip children with physical, mental, emotional and social skills that will set them up for ongoing success in karate and positively impact on all areas of their life.
At Success Martial Arts, we are taking martial arts training for children and families to a completely new level.
In the “Karate Dragons” program, we have wrapped age-appropriate skills around the basics of the traditional karate curriculum to enable your child to learn and grow at a challenging but achievable pace.
Human development is complex. Children reach certain physical, intellectual, emotional and social milestones at different ages, depending on a multitude of factors.
While recognising that each child develops at a unique pace, we have incorporated modern understanding of typical age-specific developmental characteristics to help us better teach children of different ages and to make learning more enjoyable and more effective.
Tiny Dragons 3-4 years
Three to four year olds love physical activity and anything involving play. They have a rich imagination and strong desire to be less dependent on their usual caregivers. However, many are not ready for the structured group environment of a traditional martial arts class. We target their stage of development in a manner that keeps them entertained while at the same time building skills that set them up for success.
Little Dragons 5-6 years
Five and six-year olds are the most enthusiastic students. They love creativity and problem solving. It is tempting for teachers to treat them like their older peers because they are so responsive in following tasks. However, they still do not have the basic skills necessary to keep up with older children. We target their stage of development through structured basic martial arts training that adapts to their social and intellectual curiosity while at the same time building skills that set them up for success.
Young Dragons 7-9 years
The age range seven to nine years is sometimes called "the golden age." Children in this age group are proficient in vocabulary and problem-solving, yet they are not at the age where they want complete independence from adults. This makes for a strong teacher-student relationship. However, they still lack core skills, and although they are highly intelligent, they struggle to keep up with older students. We build skills that set them up for success by targeting and adapting to their adventurous attitude and youthful nature.
Warriors 10-14 years
Ten to fourteen-year olds are the smartest students in the school. Yes, they are smarter than many adults are! They are also physically competent, able take on most physical challenges and excel at them. They are so focused on what they think is acceptable to their social peer group that they have difficulty keeping their attention on task. We nurture them through their social and emotional instability while at the same time build skills that set them up for success. We speak to them and treat them respectfully while expecting only the best from them.

Benefits for Children in a Nutshell
The Success Martial Arts Karate Dragons program is wonderful for pre-schoolers, primary school age boys and girls and teenagers. It builds coordination, strength, balance and agility. But the mental benefits are much greater. Children and adolescents who participate in our program develop confidence and high self-esteem, and learn how to focus on goals and achieve them. We teach them how perseverance leads to success in martial arts, at school and in life. As children progress through primary school and into high school, they start to encounter considerable peer pressure, so right from the beginning the martial arts mindset emphasises character development and we reinforce the importance of making good choices. As they progress through a series of coloured belt promotions they realise that they can do just about anything and be successful if they apply the mental skills we teach.
"The teachers showed a personal interest in our son right from the beginning. Our son was four when he started. He is now 16 years old, and a second degree Black Belt. He thrives on being a role model and a leader. The nurturing that goes on between student and teacher at Success Martial Arts makes them so successful at teaching valuable mental qualities along with the physical side of the martial arts." Max C, East Lismore.
